About Philpott Lake Wildlife Management Area

Philpott Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses lands managed primarily for wildlife conservation and public recreation around Philpott Lake in Patrick and Henry counties, Virginia. The area includes forested uplands, open fields, wetlands, and shoreline habitats bordering the 2,900-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir formed by the Philpott Dam on the Smith River. This WMA functions both as vital habitat for local and migratory wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and various songbirds, and as a recreational resource. Established to conserve fish and wildlife resources, it also supports a range of outdoor activities including trout and bass fishing, boating, hiking along forest and lakeside trails, and seasonal hunting. The proximity to Philpott Dam and lake adds to the scenic and recreational appeal, with several access points for water-based activities. Visitors often enjoy paddling, picnicking, bird watching, and photography in this largely forested and gently rolling landscape. The WMA features mixed pine and hardwood forests that provide critical cover and food sources for wildlife. The surrounding lake and wetland habitats support species such as blue herons and bald eagles. Facilities are modest but include boat ramps, parking areas, and scattered primitive camping spots. Philpott Lake WMA serves both locals and visitors looking to experience Virginia’s lake country and forest habitats combined in a less crowded natural setting. Its location near Martinsville and Stuart makes it accessible for day trips and outdoor excursions. Wildlife management practices within the area prioritize habitat improvement and sustainable hunting and fishing regulations to maintain ecological balance.
